Faith

Prayer, religious education and growth in the Catholic faith are fundamental to teaching and learning at SHJS. Students participate in programs of formation with their peers, parents and with the whole school community.

In addition to Mass, and weekly prayers as a student assembly, students pray together before each class, and at dismissal each day. Throughout the year, students participate in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, a Living Rosary and Living Stations of the Cross, meditation in Mary’s Garden, school-wide Advent and Lent activities, a Christmas program, and May Crowning.

School Mass

The school Mass is celebrated on Thursdays at 8:15am. Each week a different class has leadership responsibilities: writing their own Prayers of the Faithful, selecting music and songs, and practicing the readings. Our students gain experience in public speaking and group leadership, as well as deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and the parts of the Mass.

School Prayers

Chaplet

Every Monday the school prays the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, a devotion based on the visions of Jesus reported by Saint Mary Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938). Saint Faustina was a Polish nun canonized in 2000. She received the prayer through visions and conversations with Jesus.

“Chaplet is a good way to start out my week. It makes my week better. It gets me focused to start classes.”

“As a school we meet and pray. It is a good jump start to our week.”

Parents in Prayer

Every Tuesday at 8am, SHJ parents gather in the parish chapel to say the rosary for all community intentions.

Sacrament Preparation

First Reconciliation & First Communion

2nd grade students prepare for First Reconciliation, and 3rd grade prepares for First Communion and Confirmation during their regular religion class. A group Reconciliation is usually held in January and a group Communion is generally held in April. There will be two parent meetings for both Sacraments. Dates will be announced early in the school year and all parents are asked to attend. Students in 2nd grade and older may prepare for their First Sacraments in age-appropriate programs. For more information, please call the SHJ Parish Office at 303-442-6158.
